Just came back from a community meeting where I had been flattered into a position on the Board - secretary - cuz the last one quit and everyone else hates that job, and then I realized they picked me cuz they think I'm dull and will be no trouble at all. Husband Dearest says, silly them.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to errand day being over, tomorrow my plans include haven't a clue and Sunday, I want to see that new Edward Norton movie!

Manic Monday #139
What is the greatest value that guides your life?
Compassion.
Fill in the blank: If I could be anybody besides myself, I would be
my dog.
What is one item in your house that you should really throw out but probably never will?
Half a million books.

Choose Wisely
All men and women are born, live, suffer and die;
what distinguishes us one from another is our dreams,
whether they be dreams about worldly or unworldly things,
and what we do to make them come about...
We do not choose to be born.
We do not choose our parents.
We do not choose our historical epoch,
the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing.
We do not, most of us, choose to die;
nor do we choose the time and conditions of our death.
But within this realm of choicelessness,
we do choose how we live."
Joseph Epstein

Manic Monday
Manic Monday #138
How long does it take you to get out of bed in the morning?
Waterbed. Depends on if the tide's in or out.
Actually, not long. No reason to tarry, but if you really want to see some quick moves, check in when the pager goes off at 2AM. Regular firemen must be able to put on their turnouts in 90 seconds.
We told the newest EMTs, they had to go from buck naked to enroute in five minutes and they laughed 'cuz they thought we were kidding. We were kidding about the test.
Truthfully, we don't have a time standard for that, but I've done it in six.
Do you usually sleep on one side of the bed or another?
On the right, but drift toward the middle.
Something you wish to accomplish before the end of the year:
Make some money.

Politics Can Be Fun
I can hardly bring myself to type this, check out this link -- Palin for President.
There hasn't been that many high jinks in the Oval Office since Clinton was President.

Potius sero quam nunquam
Interesting article from The New Yorker.
Late Bloomers
Why do we equate genius with precocity? by Malcolm Gladwell
Picasso’s greatest works came early; Cézanne’s came late.
Ben Fountain was an associate in the real-estate practice at the Dallas offices of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, just a few years out of law school, when he decided he wanted to write fiction. The only thing Fountain had ever published was a law-review article. His literary training consisted of a handful of creative-writing classes in college. He had tried to write when he came home at night from work, but usually he was too tired to do much. He decided to quit his job.
And some Cezanne to gaze upon.

Appaloosa
New Western in town. Slow as molasses in January, but authentic for the period.
The Appaloosa in the title is a town. Dumb name for a town.
Ed Harris channeled Robert Duval.
Jeremy Irons, surprisingly good BAD guy.
Renee Zellweger, seriously miscast as the slut with the brain of a pea.
Viggo, well, Viggo is perfect as usual.
I wish Robert Parker would find another theme other than she done me wrong but I'm sticking with her no matter what. Really. People move on.

Maverick or Not
I watched the debate Thursday, and even though, I don't usually comment on politics, I think someone should mention the latest assault on the lexicon.
This is Samuel Maverick from whence the word maverick was coined.
He was famous for not branding his cattle. His reason, he didn't want to hurt them.
His neighbors thought the reason was so he could collect all the unbranded cattle, claiming they were his, even when they weren't. Trės clever, no?
Another reason, bandied about at the time, was that he was too lazy to ranch properly.
Maverick -- Original -- lazy, sneaky thief. Current -- do anything to get ahead.
Opportunist fits both eras.
Thank-you and good night.

Or Patriotism
Americanism means the virtues of
courage, honor, justice,
truth, sincerity, and hardihood --
the virtues that made America.

3. Leaves are falling all around, it's a big mess.
I have 20 Golden Willows in my front yard, so I know whereof I speak.

Seriously, you think the movie is over and the worst hasn't happened yet.
5. Christmas = good memories.
6. It was a dark and stormy night so I stayed at home.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to end of errand day, tomorrow my plans include setting up new photo printer (oops, I completely forgot I had to go to EMS Continuing Ed class all day Saturday) and Sunday, I want to a movie would be nice!
