Maverick or Not

I watched the debate Thursday, and even though, I don't usually comment on politics, I think someone should mention the latest assault on the lexicon.

This is Samuel Maverick from whence the word maverick was coined.

Cute, he ain't.

He was famous for not branding his cattle. His reason, he didn't want to hurt them.

His neighbors thought the reason was so he could collect all the unbranded cattle, claiming they were his, even when they weren't. Trės clever, no?

Another reason, bandied about at the time, was that he was too lazy to ranch properly.

Maverick -- Original -- lazy, sneaky thief. Current -- do anything to get ahead.

Opportunist fits both eras.

Thank-you and good night.
